SNORING

Causes:

Vibration of the soft palate due to a partial blockage of the air passage. The blockage of the air way is usually caused by:

  • Infection (e.g., common cold, allergic rhinitis, enlarged adenoids, or tonsils).
  • Congenital defects (e.g., large tongue, a narrow airway opening).
  • Loss of tone in the muscles that keep the airway open.
  • Obesity.
  • Alcohol, certain drugs, smoking.
  • Growth (e.g., polyps in the nose, tumor in the tongue).

What you can do:

  • Avoid sleeping on your back. Snoring normally stops once a person turns or is turned to his side.
  • If overweight reduce weight. Exercise regularly.
  • Avoid large meals before going to sleep.
  • Avoid alcohol.
  • Avoid taking or sleeping medicines.
  • Consult a doctor can do for you.
