RINGWORM (Fungal infection)

Worms have nothing whatsoever to do with this condition. The designation "ringworm" is derived from the characteristics red ring that appears on the skin. Ringworm is a common name for several types of fungal skin infections, characterized by scaly, reddish, ring-shape, patches with the tendency to form complete rings with raised borders.

This highly contagious disease can appear anywhere on the body, but it usually attacks the grains (jack itch), feet (athlete's foot), nails, scalp, or trunk. Ringworm on the scalp is often mistaken for dandruff.

Symptoms:

  • Ring-shaped red, scaly patch with a light-colored center and a prominent edge.
  • Severe itching.
  • Scalp infection - round, bald patches.
  • Nail infection - crumbly, discolored, and thickened nails.

Causes:

  • Fungal infection of the skin.

What you can do:

  • Apply anti-fungal cream, powder, or shampoo.
  • Avoid scratching the affected areas.
  • Consult a doctor if the symptoms persist, or the nails or scalp are affected.
