Urinary Tract Infections

Obstruction of the urethra, preventing all the urine in the bladder to be passed. Stagnant urine is a breeding ground for bacteria. Urethral narrowing, enlarge prostate (in men) and rarely, tumors are the usual causes of obstruction.

  • Tight-fitting clothes (e.g., under ware or pants), which trap heat and moisture, making the genital area conductive to bacterial growth.
  • The insertion of a urinary catheter or other urinary procedures (e.g., cystoscopy of the bladder with endoscopes).

Prevention tips:

  • Practice good hygiene by washing the anal and genital areas at least once a day, especially after passing stool and urination. Women's should wipe from the front to back away from the urethra. It is best to use mild soap to avoid irritation.
  • Drink plenty of fluids (8-10 glasses a day).
  • Urinate the moment the urge is felt. Postponing the act of urination retains urine in the bladder, allowing the bacteria to thrive. Women who are prone to bladder infection must urinate immediately after sexual intercourse.
  • Change sanitary napkins or tampons frequently, as germs thrive in blood.
  • Avoid tight-fitting clothes. It is best to use cottons underware.
  • Try to pass urine after sexual intercourse.
