Urinary Tract Infections

Symptoms:

  • Frequent urge to urinate, but can only pass a small amount.
  • Pain (burning or stringing sensation) when urinating.
  • Bloodstained, cloudy or foul-smelling urine.
  • Discomfort or ache in the lower abdomen and lower back.
  • Fever and chills (very rate).

Complications:

  • Pyelonephritis (kidney infection or damage), if the infection moves up to the kidney(s).

Common causes:

In women, the urinary bladder gets infected due to:

  • Front after passing stool or urination as it enables the anal or vaginal bacteria to enter the urethra.
  • Sexual intercourse or foreplay, wherein unwashed hands or penis touches the woman's genital area.
  • Inserting tampons with unwashed hands.
  • Use of spermicide contraceptives.
