ULCERS
Note if
certain visitors or telephone calls agitate the person. Discourage this
visit or calls until the person improves. Encourage people who attempt
to carry in their work routine (despite prescribed bed rest) to schedule
physical and mental relaxation.
Discourage
business phone calls and correspondence. Explore ways, with the person
and significant others or coworkers, of temporarily reducing work responsibilities.
Helping people with ulcers cope with psychosocial problems is a vital
part of intervention. Take time to learn about their stressors. Discussing
coping and relaxation techniques may enable people to better deal with
their problems.
- Smokers
have several times the frequency of ulcer than do non-smokers. Smoking
causes constriction (tightening) of the small vessels, and that prevents
adequate nourishment to the wall of then stomach.
- Diets
that have pepper or spices usually don't play very much of the role;
but irregular meal habits, by preventing the buffering (neutralization)
of the acid by food, offer can result in a dietary contribution to
the problem. The diet must meet basic nutritional needs. Because an
empty stomach stimulates gastric acid secretion, advise the person
to avoid this by eating small amount at frequent, regular intervals.
