Sinusitis

What you can do:

  • Consult your doctor when the symptoms are felt for a prolonged period of time, or when the symptoms become worse.
  • Drink plenty of fluids to help thin the mucus.
  • If you are a smoker, stop smoking. Smoking irritates the sinus lining thereby causing it to be inflamed.
  • Avoid alcoholic beverage as this causes swelling of the nasal sinus membranes.
  • Steam inhalation will soothe the inflamed sinus cavities.
  • Applying a hot water bottle, hot or wet compress, or an electric heating pad over the forehead or inflamed area can provide temporary relief.
  • If possible exercise as this helps reduce congestions by increasing nasal discharge.

Prevention Tips:

  • Avoid smoking or drinking alcoholic beverages.
  • Stay away from allergens that trigger your allergies, e.g., food, pollens, molds, dust or dander.
  • Keep your surrounding as clean and as dust-free as possible.
  • Avoid frequent swimming in the pools heavily treated with chlorine. Chlorine can imitate the lining if the nose and sinuses.
