What You Should Know About Epilepsy?

Common Types of Seizures.

1. PARTIAL SEIZURES: Brief twitching, jerking of one arm, leg or half of the face. This form of seizure originates from some specific area in the brain and thus involves the activity of a specific region of the body.
2. Partial sensory seizures: Brief unusual sensations or numbness on one arm, leg or half of the face, transient or visual disturbances.
   Partial complex seizures: Brief and sudden changes in their behavior or mental state; appears to be in a trance, stares blankly, unresponsive when spoken to.

GENERALIZED SEIZURES
Absence seizure: Frequent repeated spells of day dreaming or brief staring or blinking spells in children.

Drop Attack (Atonic): Sudden falls or collapse, head drops.
Myoclonic seizures: Massive muscle jerks.
Generalized Tonic- Clonic Seizure: Stiffening followed by generalized jerking.
Special epileptic syndromes include such entities as other myoclonic epilepsies, reflex epilepsies, and febrile seizures of infancy.

Causes of Epilepsy in Childhood
The etiologies, which underlie the development of epilepsy in childhood, vary in an age-dependent fashion. Seizures in neonates, infants, and toddlers most frequently result from perinatal brain injury, congenital central nervous system malformations, and metabolic derangements. Central nervous system infection, genetic epilepsies, and neurodegenerative disorders are more likely to present with seizures beginning in later childhood. These causes stand in stark contrast to the adult population, where traumatic brain injury, cerebrovascular disease, and neoplasms represent the most frequent causes of seizures.
