General Nursing©What You Should Know About Epilepsy? I was visiting an institution to see my old friend. I was then walking in the corridor when suddenly a seizure attack happened to a young man about my age. A great number of students instantly gathered around closely to watch him. I rebuke them to give a space for him to breath and to waggle. Abruptly, I recalled from our training to avoid restraining the patient during seizure by helping him towards lying position, loosening tight clothing, and placing a pillow, jacket, or hand under the head. If the patient's mouth is open, protect the tongue by placing a soft object (such as folded cloth) between his teeth. Then, turn the head to provide an open airway. In the hospital, as a nurse, when we administered phenytoin I.V., we use a large vein and monitor vital signs often. We avoid I.M. administration and mixing with dextrose solutions. I was inspired to write this article about seizure disorder, hoping that this may help us be of help to those people who has epilepsy. Epilepsy is the most common chronic brain disorder in every country in the world. More than 50 million people suffer from epilepsy. The incidence of epilepsy, that is the number of newly diagnosed cases over a specific period of time (e.g., one year), depends somewhat on the age of the individual. About one out of three people with epilepsy develop the condition by age 18. More than half of all people with epilepsy develop symptoms before the age of 25. |
