General Nursing©ANEMIA Diagnosis: Blood testing is used to identify the amount of hemoglobin in the blood. The percentage of red blood cells may also be measured and compared to the amount seen in healthy individuals. Cells may also be examined under a microscope to evaluate their size, appearance and shape. In special cases, a bone marrow biopsy (sample of tissue) may also be examined. Other tests
may be required to identify those pre-existing medical conditions, which
may be causing the Anemia
As with any condition, treatment options vary depending on the causes of the condition and other variables, such as presence of other illness or medications. Anemia with severe symptoms may require rapid correction by transfusion of red blood cells. If a source
of red blood cell destruction can be identified (such as a specific
medication), this must also be addressed separately. |
