Nutritional requirements for the skin are the same as for the rest of the body- a balanced diet of fruits, vegetables, grains, meats, milk, and eggs. Dry skin will benefit from a simple oil, cream or lotion. Since hormones can be absorbed through the skin in quantities large enough to have side effects, hormone skin creams should be used only on the recommendation of a physician. Exotic ingredients such as orchid pollen, royal bee jelly, and turtle oil are of no special medical or cosmetic value. Persons bothered by skin irritations may reduce or eliminate the irritation by using some common sense. Underarm irritation may come from rubbing too hard when drying, as well as from a cosmetic drug. Shaving too closely damages the skin. Clothing worn too tightly can chafe. Stiff, new clothing can also be a cause of skin irritation-especially some of the new permanent-press clothes. When a product containing alcohol, such as most deodorants, is applied to already irritated skin, temporary burning sensation occurs. |
